Consider Steve’s story.
A recently retired chemical process engineering rep of 42+ years, Steve and his wife Mary learned about Brookstone Schools from our Head of School John Murray and the church they attend together—Church of the Apostles in Uptown Charlotte.
“We attended a Brookstone community event, where my heart was touched by the tremendous possibilities for young students.”

As Steve shared with me, “Students who might not otherwise be able to have the opportunity to thrive educationally, personally, and spiritually. To potentially break the oppressive cycle.”
“My first step was to become a ‘lunch buddy’ with a fifth grader. To make it comfortable at first, he would invite a classmate to join us.
We slowly got to know each other, sharing a little about our families and life. This led me to help at Brookstone’s Field Day; what joy and fun!
Also, I’ve been able to get a couple students involved in a local soccer league.”
Two things epitomize the joy of it all:
First, receiving a hand-written thank you note from my buddy asking me to continue doing it next school year.
Second, having at least five or six of his fellow classmates grab me by the elbow and say, ‘LOOK at my project!’ The gleam in their eyes, just for paying attention to them, spoke volumes!"
