A school that is educating the whole child knows that there is more to an education than just classwork. One equally important aspect of our mission is equipping students “socially.”
For those who work with young people today, perhaps one of the most concerning issues we face is what has been called “the epidemic of loneliness” among America’s youth. This lack of social engagement and connectedness is deeply troubling and calls for deliberate action.
At Brookstone, knowing that God has created us for relationships—ultimately with Him--we prioritize the social development of our students by emphasizing the art of cultivating community.
Along these lines, our grade-level retreats, field trips, and school-wide celebrations serve a dual purpose of both academic enrichment and meaningful community building.
Our classically-based, Christ-centered model of education purposefully invites students to interact not only with their peers but with adults—from teachers, tutors, and therapists to volunteers and partners.
We also create connections between older and younger students through weekly “reading buddy” visits, where 5th and 6th graders visit 1st and 2nd grade classrooms to read and discuss books together.
Upper school students participate in weekly electives which allow 5th through 7th graders to explore new activities—from crocheting and public speaking, to ultimate frisbee and double-dutch. They also play board and card games, build puzzles, and practice crafts, like decoupage and origami.
Our 7th and 8th graders serve each week at Metro School next door, building relationships with students who have physical and intellectual disabilities.
Upper school students also participate in sports programming which builds teamwork and camaraderie - as featured in recent newsletters and social media.
Overall, Brookstone’s conscious focus on social development demonstrates the value we place on our students’ identities as image-bearers of God—made for meaningful community.
